What is the best way to arrange plants in a garden?
There are two basic rules when arranging plants in the beds: 1) space the individual plants so that they touch each other when they reach their mature size, and 2) overlap the masses of plants and connect them so that they flow without space between them. Avoid gaps or large open areas between masses. As a general rule, put tall veggies toward the back of the bed, mid-sized ones in the middle, and smaller plants in the front or as a border. Consider adding pollinator plants to attract beneficial insects that can not only help you get a better harvest, but will also prey on garden pests.
What is the most common mistake of first time gardeners?
Overwatering. Overwatering is one of the most common mistakes new gardeners make and I’ve certainly been guilty of it myself. The roots need to be able to get oxygen and they aren’t able to do this if they’re constantly in water. Mistake #1: Selecting the Wrong Gardening Container That leaves your plant roots in wet soil because they can’t absorb all the moisture, making them more susceptible to root rot. Conversely, the soil dries quickly in gardening containers that are too small. And that leads to you constantly having to water your plants.
