A plant is defined as a living thing that grows on the earth. The parts of the plant include a stem, leaves, and roots. The plant provides food, fibre, shelter, medicine, and fuel. The four main parts of a plant are the flower, leaf, stem and roots. Each of these parts does a different job. The flower is where the plant reproduces; the leaf is where photosynthesis occurs; the stem stores food and supports the rest of the plant; and the roots absorb water and nutrients from the ground.
How many types of plants are around us?
There are about 380,000 known species of plants, of which the majority, some 260,000, produce seeds. A wheat field contains about 150 plants per square metre, which scales up to a population of perhaps 300 trillion plants globally. Bracken might also be a likely candidate.
