Does lavender annoy cats?
We think of lavender as being calming, but this odor is not pleasant to cats and, this is another herb and essential oil that can actually be quite toxic. Lavender oils can cause signs like difficulty breathing, drooling, fatigue, and muscle tremors whether inhaled or ingested. Lavender contains two compounds: linalool and linalyl acetate. These are totally fine for humans but toxic to cats. The tricky part is that cats don’t have the liver enzymes needed to break these compounds down. So, whether it’s a fresh plant or a fancy essential oil diffuser, lavender can be dangerous.
What scent is toxic to cats?
Many liquid potpourri products and essential oils are poisonous to cats, including oil of cinnamon, citrus, pennyroyal, peppermint, pine, sweet birch, tea tree (melaleuca), wintergreen, and ylang ylang. Cats dislike the smell of certain scents, such as citrus, eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint, and rosemary.
