What makes a good tree picture?
Look for shapes, patterns, and rhythms in the scene, and aim to achieve a sense of flow and balance. Don’t worry about capturing every detail of a tree; instead, concentrate on how elements like branches, leaves, and trunks interact within the larger environment. A wide angle lens will help to give separation by make other trees seem more distant. Photographing from a low angle gives the feel that your trees are powerful and massive. Soft natural light with a wisp of fog is a great opportunity if you can be in the forest when that is happening. If you can get close, try using a wide-angle lens to show the entire tree in all its glory. You can also zoom out to create interesting minimalist images (with the tree framed by the beautiful background). And if you can’t get close to the tree, consider using a telephoto lens.
