What summer flowers will grow in pots in shade?
Shade-loving flowers aren’t too hard to find—check your local garden store. Try impatiens, coleus, sweet potato vines, violas, petunias, pansies, hostas, astilbes, and trilliums. They look great and will thrive in full to partial shade. And don’t forget to think vertically when designing your containers. There are even herbaceous perennials that will look great in containers in autumn and winter – either from their foliage or their autumnal flowers. Go for the following: heuchera, hylotelephium (sedums), japanese anemones, liriope muscari, persicaria (red bistort) and symphyotrichum (asters, michaelmas daisies).
What can I plant in pots in August?
It’s also a good month to plant autumn-flowering bulbs such as colchicums and flowers that will bring instant colour to fading borders. Plants such as marigolds and shrubs like caryopteris can also be planted in pots, but these will have to be watered frequently to stop them drying out. For a splash of seasonal colour, plant winter bedding plants like pansies, violas, cyclamen, and primroses. These hardy little blooms come in a rainbow of colours and can brave cold weather and frost. To help them thrive, plant them in a nutrient-rich, well-draining container and set them in a sunny spot.Cyclamen The dainty jewel-like flowers of cyclamen (Cyclamen hederifolium) start to emerge in autumn and can be seen right through the winter, adding colour to the shaded areas they thrive in. Hardy, outdoor cyclamen can be found in shades of strong pinks through to white.
