Can I plant carrots in May?
As a cool-season vegetable, carrots are best planted in the very early spring and fall—they will not thrive during hot weather. The right planting time is about 2-4 weeks before your last frost date. Many cool season vegetables grow throughout the warm summer weather, but they can tolerate colder temperatures and many can be planted as soon as the ground isn’t frozen (mid-March to early April). Cool season vegetables can also be grown as it cools down in the fall from September to early November.Quick-growing vegetables perfect for cool spring and fall growing conditions include leafy greens, carrots, beets, radishes, and peas. Started from seed, many are ready for harvest in just four to six weeks.Brassicas – kale, cabbage, turnips, and broccoli will all grow over the winter months. Some varieties of spinach beet will survive frosts. Root veg such as carrots and beetroot can be harvested late autumn, and stored carefully for several months. As can potatoes, onions and garlic.
Can I plant cucumber in May?
If you want cucumbers all summer, I’d suggest starting one plant in mid-May, another mid-July, and a last ‘succession’ in late August that will feed you through the fall. You’ll want to find the sunniest spot in your garden and space plants about 2 feet apart. They can be started indoors about 4 – 6 weeks before last frost and transplanted outdoors after danger of frost for earlier blooms. I have rabbits and rodents and squirrels in the yard, if I put beans, peas and squash seeds directly in ground, they just eat it.In the very early Spring (end of January to March) you can sow hardy annual seeds.
